Some of the fastest machinery in Ireland will be in action in Co Clare this
coming weekend, Galway Motor Club and Clare Motor Club will jointly host these
two days of high octane action; on two of Irelands most prestigious hills. The
event held in picturesque village of Ballyvaughan, and just a short drive
to Corkscrew & Ballyallaban Hills.
Last years rounds on these hills was without doubt an awe inspiring
epic episode of the championship, Current Champion Simon McKinley and Paul
O'Connell set the hills ablaze with their pace. Simon set a new record for
Ballyallaban. And it seemed the laws of Physics did not apply to these
combatants as they pushed the perceivable barrier of speed further than anyone
has ever done before.
So what about this year? well so far despite suffering a major engine failure
due to a stone lodging in his Timing Belt, Simon McKinley leads the championship
as it makes its way to Co Clare. Paul O'Connell in his older Delta T79 initially
set the pace in Wexford, but Simon soon showed why he is champion, Simon,
double driving Dermot Nolans Reynard, soon stamped his authority on the
event.
Both of these hills have seen plenty of action over the years, Corkscrew,
although resurfaced has lost none of her old charm, the quick succession of
Hairpin Bends test drivers to the limit, and punish those who get their lines
wrong. Spectating from the old picnic area gives the best vantage point,
and the glorious sound of a V8 blasting off from the start line is a real treat
for petrol heads of all ages.
Ballyallaban hill on the other hand has a fearsome reputation, this 2.2 mile
of Tarmac has claimed many a driver over the years, few but the most fool hardy
or Brave will not show due respect for this lady, for she is fickle indeed. A
competitor can start in the sunshine and by the time they are half way,
encounter a down pour of her infamous horizontal rain, steep drops and hard
walls that appear from no place are just some of the obstacles a driver will
encounter. Sharp rocks (shark's teeth) protrude through the Tarmac, making
driving lines difficult.
So don't miss out on seeing some of the fastest machinery in the country go
head to head on two of the most prestigious hills in Ireland, the action will be
fast and furious...
